Slogging through assessment portfolios again….  In one essay, a student discusses how Matthew Arnold had left Christianity and instead looked for guidance from Agnosticism.  Join me for a moment in being puzzled by that.  How would deciding not to be sure about the existence of the Divine provide any guidance?  Provide a space for tolerance, certainly.  Expand ones ability to entertain contradictions, of course. But…. argh….

Anyway, let’s move on to:

“Samuel Daniel’s internal wrestling with his talent, importance, and self-doubt created a paradox within both his works and life that continues to baffle and perplex the readers and critics of his work.”


“Interwoven with Daniel’s apparent dislike for those who criticized him was Daniel’s lack of financial success.”
