Things Not to Do: jump into the only train on the platform, then realize after the doors slide shut that you are starting to move north, not south.
Now, the train I was supposed to get on was supposedly still boarding, but it must have left just before I thundered down the stairs, so it wasn’t completely mad for me to have thought I was getting on my intended train. On the other hand, I met some very nice conductors who kept me from wigging out completely and got me to my destination after a hour’s high-speed (de)tour of the Eastern Seaboard.
Now if only the Vermonter ran overnight, I could ride north on purpose….
I’ve done that, too. Left Baltimore hoping to get out at Washington Union Station, wound up on the Acela zarking towards NYC. Delaware has a very nice train station with the tiled foyer, don’t it?

I never got as far as the foyer, as a southbound train [the Crescent] was still in the station, so I was walked aboard and told to sit in the cafe car. But I would like to see the station sometime; I love old rail architecture.
Heh- try doing that in Japan, and ending up 2 HOURS away from where you’re supposed to be… sigh…
I can see how the Japanese version of the error would be even more dramatic [although the scenery probably would be as well].
Did it in NYC with the subway. Either E/W or N/S. I forget which. Realized my mistake and re-righted myself in about a stop.
And you still managed to get a lovely loco shot. Bless you.
